The reason for the popularity of this kind of over and under bets is due to its simplicity and also the fact that one can use it in all popular sports e.g.
- Basketball
- Football
- Volleyball
- Tennis.
This kind of bet is placed generally on the goals or actual points of a game. Also, it is not so complicated to understand.
Let us take the example of a football game. In football, the common over/under bet will be over/under 2.5 goals. Suppose you bet on below 5 goals, then you win the bet only when the total goals made are below 2.5 goals.
This will mean for the results – 0-2, 2-0, 0-1, 1-0, 1-1, 0-0 you will win. For any other score, you lose. In the same way, there can be bets like – over/under 4.5 or over/under 3.5 are also available with most bookmakers.
Now let us take the example of a basketball game. You can have many variations like in the 1st half or during the final game or just for a single team or both; however, they all have to consider the total points.
Assuming that a bookmaker decides a total score of any game will be 200.5 points. Then if you select under 200.5, then you win only if the total points of both the teams are below 200.5. Also, even with a 100-100 score, you are a winner.
You must have noticed in over/under bets, usually, a number like 50 is not used but 50.5 are used, but this is always not the case. What can happen if you bet on the result with over 50? Here, you simply don’t win nor lose and your bet money will be returned.
